6061 T6 aluminum is a heat-treatable alloy with good formability, weldability, machinability, and moderate strength, which can still maintain good operation after annealing. The main alloying elements of 6061 aluminum are magnesium and silicon, which form Mg2Si phase. If it contains a certain amount of manganese and chromium, it can neutralize the bad effect of iron; Sometimes a small amount of copper or zinc is added to improve the strength of the alloy without significantly reducing its corrosion resistance; There is a small amount of copper in the conductive material to offset the bad effect of titanium and iron on the conductivity; Zirconium or titanium can refine grain and control recrystallization structure; Lead and bismuth can be added to improve machinability. Mg2Si is solidly dissolved in aluminum, and the alloy has the function of artificial aging hardening.

6061 aluminum tube is a kind of precipitated hardening aluminum alloy with magnesium and silicon as the main alloying elements. It was originally called "Alloy 61S" and was invented in 1935. It is one of the most versatile aluminum alloys and can be used in most general purpose environments. The most commonly used states of 6061 aluminum tubes are annealed 6061-O state, age hardened 6061-T6 state and pre-drawn 6061-T651 state.

The main uses of the 6061 aluminum tube are as follows:

1. The construction of aircraft structures, such as wings and fuselages, is more widely used in small private planes made by individuals than in commercial and military aircraft. While the 2024 aluminum tube is stronger, the 6061 aluminum tube is easier to work with and more resistant to corrosion than the 2024 material, even if the tube is scratched. 2024 material is often made of aluminum clad panels to increase corrosion resistance.

6061 aluminum tube is produced by hot extrusion combination die, it also has excellent forging properties. Aluminum ingots are heated in an induction furnace and then passed through a machine into a mold, which can be extruded to produce aluminum tubes. Auto parts, industrial parts, etc., are made by forging 6061 aluminum ingot. This material has high weldability and can be welded by tungsten grade inert gas shielded welding. But after welding, the welding joint due to high temperature, and then natural cooling, it is equivalent to annealing, so that the state of the welding joint will be 6061-O state, the strength will be reduced by more than 80%. The aluminum tube can then be heated again after welding, to T4 or T6 state, to increase strength.
